In today’s fast-paced world, developing deep knowledge and meaningful learning is a growing challenge. Guided by experts in STEM education, around 500 lower secondary school students from IC Bolzano V “Archimede,” IC Bolzano II “Ada Negri,” IC Laives “F. Filzi,” and IC Bolzano VI “Ugo Foscolo” will dedicate an entire school year to exploring a STEM-related theme.
This project offers a creative, multidisciplinary, and engaging journey, introducing new stimuli into school life to sharpen digital literacy, strengthen research and critical thinking skills, and deepen understanding in STEM subjects.
The ultimate goal is to help young people develop transversal skills through the scientific method — skills they can apply across different contexts — equipping them with the tools to understand and interpret the complexities of today’s world. In doing so, the project contributes to shaping aware, responsible citizens who observe their surroundings with a critical and thoughtful eye.
An educational and scientific alliance across the territory
This initiative acts as a bridge between the school environment and extracurricular spaces, creating an educational ecosystem that brings together schools, local research institutes, associations, and families.
A key strength of the project is its ability to build networks: Science in Depth (SiD) integrates into the well-established festival Le Mille e una Scienza, expanding partnerships with institutions like Fraunhofer Italia and Eco Research. Through these collaborations, students will gain firsthand exposure to real-world scientific applications via lab visits and immersive experiences. Engaging directly with researchers will give students a unique opportunity to witness cutting-edge applied science and advanced technologies in action.
STEM at school
The dialogue with schools enriches not only the students’ learning journey but also the teachers’. Dedicated training modules will be offered to teachers to help them innovate their science teaching, making it more engaging, interdisciplinary, and impactful.
STEM beyond the classroom
Extracurricular activities will be developed in collaboration with educators from the association “La Strada – der Weg ONLUS.” Workshops, hands-on labs, and experiential activities in STEM fields will allow students—especially girls and boys traditionally underrepresented in science—to take center stage as active participants and creators.
The Competence E-Portfolio
All the skills and knowledge acquired during the project will be collected in a Competence E-Portfolio — a tool designed to document lifelong learning across formal, informal, and non-formal contexts. Through this portfolio, participants will be able to reflect on and showcase their SiD journey, making connections with other skills, interests, and opportunities.
The Festival “Le Mille e una Scienza”
Science in Depth will culminate at the Le Mille e una Scienza Festival, where students will take the spotlight. By sharing their experiences and presenting STEM/STEAM activities, they will help weave stronger ties between the SiD project and the broader festival—an event that for years has brought together provincial and national research institutes, science communicators, and distinguished guests at Castel Mareccio.
The future of knowledge begins in depth.
