POPs Day 2025 – InterCinD Annual Meeting in Bari

The POPs Day 2025, organized by InterCinD, took place on June 5, 2025, in Bari as the annual appointment dedicated to participating laboratories and all stakeholders interested in the issues related to environmental micropollutants.

The event represented an important opportunity for discussion and updates on the results of the latest Proficiency Test (PT) edition and on the most recent challenges concerning the impact of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and emerging contaminants – such as PFAS, microplastics, and endocrine disruptors – on the environment, food, and human health.

The program included high-level plenary sessions with contributions from experts from research institutes, companies, and institutions. Among the presentations, Dr. Werner Tirler (Eco Research) gave a lecture entitled “Mass spectrometry in environmental analysis: from dioxins to micro and nanoplastics”, highlighting the role of this technology in the detection and study of micropollutants.

Significant attention was also devoted to data quality assurance and the most innovative technological developments, with presentations on GC-HRAM, GCMS, LC-MS/MS, and new systems for monitoring and removing contaminants.

Enriched by networking opportunities and exchanges between laboratories, institutions, and companies, the event reaffirmed the role of InterCinD as a reference point for sharing knowledge and best practices in the field of environmental contamination.
